I read about PuG etiquette over at Jed’s Corner of WoW Shennigans and it got me to thinking about manners in wow and the LFG/LFR set. First I would like to say that I love looking for group and raid finder. I think they are awesome and have done a lot for allowing people to actually play the game if they don’t have 5 to 25 buddies just waiting around to do something. As someone who played a hunter through Burning Crusade, well after people were already raiding on the server I was on then….*waves at Thunderhorn-US*, I spent many many hours sitting in Shattrath spamming LFM SLabs! Just need a _____ and we’re G2G! (sidenote: stupid freaking polearm). The thing I dislike about them however, is the fact that..well…manners have all but disappeared it seems.
It started with looking for group, people no longer had to worry about having a good rep on their server in order to be able to find groups for doing daily heroics. Which led further into the “who cares” attitude that seems to be prevalent among the general population. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that every player is like this at all! However, it’s the ones that are that make doing randoms pretty much the least favorite thing for me to do outside of a guild group. There’s the ones who roll need on everything, but do it after everyone else rolls greed..while there’s no such thing as ninja looting in World of Warcraft, there’s a such thing as being a jerk! There’s the ones who refuse to do things as part of the group, whether it is pulling aggro, refusing to crowd control, or running off in an entirely different direction. And there’s the ones who want to be verbally abusive to the group. They may be flexing their epeen or they may just be assholes. Vote to kick was a great addition, but it’s still not great.
Then you have raid finder. So what you do in raid finder, is queue, either with friends, alcohol or both and pray that only one or two ill mannered puggers are in the group. Again, don’t get me wrong, I know that not everyone is this way…but I have been in LFR with about 20 of them at once. At that point I usually just drop group. I’m also not bashing people who are genuinely new…usually you can tell if someone is new or being an ass. New folks? No issues, I’ll explain how to do the fight (or carry you if needed) until I’m blue in the face. Jerks? you’re getting vote kicked asap, if it doesn’t pass, to Ignore you go!
I miss people being forced to behave because their reputation (or their guild’s reputation) was on the line. I do not miss sitting in town for hours spamming trade trying to get a group together. Do you think it’s possible for the manners to return to WoW?
